Alphonse Eklou Uwantege

Queer Sagittarius, born in Minsk to a Rwandan mother and a Togolese father.

Alphonse is a model, performer and director based in Brussels.

Their practice uses the body as a tool, writing as a weapon of resurrection, and performance as a political urgency. Their method is grounded in the desire to subvert representational norms and to shift the relationship between audiences and performers by disrupting stage spaces.

Holding a master’s degree from ISAC, they create work between Brussels, Antwerp, Kigali and Paris, weaving collaborations that span performance, fashion, dance, theatre and the visual arts.

In restes (offrrande au million), the first part of their diptych (currently in creation), Alphonse develops research into transgenerational trauma, invisible memory and colonial transmissions in a solo dedicated to their uncle, Alphonse Kanimba, who died during the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.

With failles (oqt), they continue this research through their own family history: exile, years without legal papers, the expulsion order received as a child, and the ways these experiences imprint themselves on bodies and modes of presence. The work is built as a duo with their father, around gestures, lost languages, administrative documents and ways of resisting erasure.
