Mathieu Charles

Mathieu Charles is a performer who incorporates different styles of text and performance within his art. Though his slam poetry and spoken word stem from a background in hip-hop and rap, theater has always been the common thread that meandered in between. As a thirteen-year-old boy, he listened to rap music and tried to mimic it as best he could. Without receiving proper education within the artform, he managed to distill a language and performance style of his own.

Acquired through lots of reflection and conversation, Charles also possesses expertise in topics such as anti-racism, decolonization and intersectionality. Unbridled curiosity is what fuels this autodidact performer. It is what led him to all he does today: art and academically-oriented assignments (i.e. guest lecturing in schools etc.). Both as artist and student of life he tries to substantively deepen.

The work Mathieu Charles has put in for years in his room is now recognized, appreciated, framed and supported by major organizations and institutions. This is, for both him and for these organizations in question, a very instructive exchange and experience.
